Hello World! My name is Matt McCullough. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been making video games. Specifically RPGs..
Today I introduce the first Developer Log of a journey of probably 4 years, attempting to understand how to create a functional online roleplaying game. My ambitions are large, but as I’ve learned over time, the best way to get there is just to start.

Alright let’s get to the important stuff. What is Aetherion Online?
Join an online world where you go on adventures, meet your friends for quests, make new allies, explore, kill, craft, and most importantly, grow.
It all started as a single player game, a tactics roleplaying game to be exact. However, as the game development went on, I became disheartened. I knew I really wanted to create something that allowed players to share an experience together, and so I set out to writing a game server.
I had been programming for years, but was newer to Golang. Therefore, on my journey to understand the language better (and it’s use of goroutines for concurrency) I figured it would be the best way to create a game server from scratch.
